Betting has its own vocabulary, and the bet slip does not wait while you look words up. This glossary collects the 40 terms that cover 95% of what you will meet in a sportsbook in 2026 — from accumulator to void bet — each explained in one plain sentence with the context that actually matters.
The bet types
- Single: one selection, one outcome — the simplest bet there is.
- Accumulator (acca): several selections combined; all must win for the ticket to pay.
- System: a set of accumulators covering combinations of your selections, forgiving one or more wrong legs.
- Each way: two bets in one — on the win and on a placed finish, common in racing and golf.
- Handicap: a head start given to one side to level the contest for betting purposes.
- Asian handicap: the two-way handicap family that removes the draw and adds refunds via whole and quarter lines.
- Over/under (totals): a bet on whether a statistic — goals, points, corners — finishes above or below a line.
- BTTS (both teams to score): wins if each side scores at least once.
- Correct score: predicting the exact final score — high odds, low hit rate.
- Outright (futures): a long-term bet on a competition winner or season outcome.

Money and odds vocabulary
- Odds: the price expressing both payout and implied probability.
- Decimal odds: total return per unit staked, stake included — 2.50 returns 2.5 units per 1.
- Fractional odds: profit relative to stake, the British notation — 6/4 equals decimal 2.50.
- American odds: plus numbers show profit per 100 staked; minus numbers show the stake needed to win 100.
- Implied probability: one divided by decimal odds — the chance the price assigns.
- Margin (vig, juice): the bookmaker's built-in edge, visible when outcome probabilities sum above 100%.
- Stake: the amount risked on a bet.
- Payout: the total returned on a winning bet, stake plus profit.
- Bankroll: money set aside exclusively for betting.
- Unit: a standard stake size, usually 1–2% of the bankroll, used for tracking.
- Value bet: a bet where your estimated probability beats the implied one.

In-play and settlement terms
- Live (in-play) betting: wagering while the event is running, at constantly updated odds.
- Cash out: settling a bet before the event ends at the bookmaker's quoted price.
- Partial cash out: banking part of the bet while the remainder stays live.
- Suspension: a market temporarily closed while an event — a goal, a penalty — is priced in.
- Push: an exact tie against the line; the stake is refunded.
- Void bet: a cancelled bet with stake returned — postponed matches, retired players.
- Dead heat: two or more winners tied; payouts are split by the tying selections.
- Rule 4: a deduction applied to odds when a late withdrawal shortens the field, mainly in racing.
- Settlement: the official grading of a bet as won, lost, pushed or void.
Behavior and safety terms
- Chasing losses: increasing stakes to win back money just lost — the classic bankroll killer.
- Tilt: emotional, undisciplined betting after a frustrating result.
- Deposit limit: an account cap on how much you can deposit per period.
- Self-exclusion: a voluntary block on your own account for a set period or permanently.
- KYC: the identity verification every licensed bookmaker must run before payouts.
- Wagering requirement: how many times bonus funds must be bet before withdrawal.
- Free bet: a token bet where the stake is not returned with winnings.
